E-cigarettes and oral health

E-cigarettes and oral health

Smoking conventional tobacco is becoming less fashionable. However, new ways of smoking have been invented, which are believed to be less toxic, and which are booming among young people. We are talking about e-cigarettes or heated tobacco in shishas, for example. But, are these forms of tobacco consumption really less harmful to our health?

The answer is a resounding NO. Consuming tobacco, even in more modern devices such as e-cigarettes, is also harmful to our health, and not only to oral health, which we will discuss today, but to our health in general. However, even with this evidence on the table, it is estimated that more than 40% of students have tried e-cigarettes at least once.

How does e-cigarette affect our oral health?

Regular consumption of this substance could be related to periodontitis according to some research published in Science Advances. People who smoke daily, either traditional tobacco or through electronic cigarettes, show potentially infectious oral bacteria. In other words, what is known as “vaping” has been classified as another risk factor for developing different oral diseases, from periodontitis to cancer.

From the dental practice, it is essential that we know the patient’s history in order to determine the cause of any complication. Eradicating bad habits, such as smoking, in any of its forms, is very important to maintain good health, which is why at Clínica Bajo we always recommend eliminating its consumption.

However, if you are a smoker, you should be aware that it is even more important to have the relevant check-ups, and even in shorter periods of time than another person who does not smoke. Detecting any anomaly in time will help us to apply more effective treatments.
