Periodontics in Tenerife: the definitive solution to bleeding gums and gingivitis
Periodontal diseases are a group of diseases that affect the tissues surrounding the tooth. They are diseases of an inflammatory nature and of infectious cause that if left untreated can lead to tooth loss.
The most common gum diseases are gingivitis and periodontitis, also known as pyorrhea.
Symptoms and Signs of Periodontal Disease
Both gingivitis and periodontitis rarely cause pain, so patients suffer from it without being aware of it.
The first symptom of periodontal disease is bleeding gums when brushing. When it is already evolved, symptoms such as gum recession, mobility, increased sensitivity, bad breath appear… The evolution of the disease varies from one patient to another, in some it evolves quickly and in others it is slower, but without treatment you will always lose your teeth.
Treatment
The goal of treatment is to eliminate the infection that causes the disease. At our dental clinic in Tenerife we use mini-instruments and minimally invasive techniques to remove bacteria that have accumulated under the gum.
In some cases, periodontal microsurgery is needed in certain areas of the mouth to restore tissues that have been damaged. These surgeries are performed with a microscope and microsurgery materials, reducing their aggressiveness and therefore leading to an excellent post-operative period.
Preventive treatment
Periodontal patients are people prone to this oral disease. The bacteria that cause it are present in their mouths, so you need to do everything you can to avoid a relapse.
Once the treatment is completed, the risk of periodontal destruction of each patient will be assessed. Due to the multi-factorial component of periodontal disease, there are factors that the professional cannot control, so periodic supportive treatment and review is necessary to avoid areas of relapse. This periodicity will be assessed in each particular case.
We call this phase the maintenance phase, where we detect areas of relapse early before bone loss occurs. It should not be confused with conventional oral cleanings. These, even done periodically, do not prevent the appearance of gum disease or prevent relapses and this is scientifically proven.
During this phase our hygienist or dentist will perform the following procedures:
- Detect changes in overall health that aggravate periodontal disease. It is scientifically proven that periodontitis affects the cardiovascular system, worsens certain metabolic states such as diabetes and can create problems of premature births in pregnant women.
- Reevaluate the levels of periodontal attachment and detect weak areas at risk of relapse by instituting specific treatments, both mechanical and chemical debridements.
- Assess the effectiveness of plaque control and establish specific cleaning methods.
- Possibility of carrying out microbiological analyses in areas that are difficult to control.
The frequency of maintenance appointments will be tailored to each particular case.
Computer Scan
Modern periodontics is based on effective monitoring of periodontal disease activity during patient follow-up. The most reliable method for detecting areas of periodontal activity is the comparison of consecutive mediations (precision drilling). In order to achieve this goal, the University of Florida (USA) The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has developed a computerized periodontal probing system called the Florida Probe.
Cínica Bajo, in its eagerness to have the most advanced technology to care for our patients, has introduced the concept of Florida probing.
Benefits for patients
- Greater accuracy of the scan (the probe uses an accuracy of 20grs.)
- Reduced human error when recording data.
- Reduction of contamination, by avoiding simultaneous annotation of the scan.
- Better presentation of the results to the patient: The patient receives a complete periodontal chart with all their analysis of gingival bleeding index and plaque, and diagrams indicating the areas where their hygiene should be improved.
Gummy smile treatment
A beautiful smile is not only having white and straight teeth, but it encompasses the entire framework of tissues that surround the teeth: lips and gums.
We understand that a person has a gummy smile when laughing shows 2mm of gum above the teeth. It affects women more than men and for some people it can be unsightly, which is why we offer treatment to correct it.
It is necessary to differentiate what is the cause of the gummy smile because it can be a skeletal problem that requires maxillary surgery or a bone-gingival problem that has an easier treatment.
On other occasions, the gummy smile can often be corrected with orthodontics and/or minimally invasive surgery treatments to elevate the gum. In our dental clinic in Tenerife we will make a correct diagnosis of your case.
