Fortunately, science continues to advance, and research leads us to learn new data each year that helps us prevent and eradicate different diseases. This advancement is essential to also find more effective and accessible treatments, to mitigate risk factors, and to establish functional protocols. Today, we want to discuss the possible relationship between periodontitis and the development of cardiovascular disease.
According to research presented at the European Society of Cardiology ESC Congress 2021, periodontitis is associated with a higher risk of suffering from cardiovascular disease, with the severity of one also related to the severity of the other. While it is true that this possible relationship was already known thanks to previous studies, this research brings us closer to this reality, which is essential to take into account on a daily basis.
Research that concludes the relationship between periodontitis and cardiovascular disease
This analysis that we mention was carried out with 1,587 participants with an average age of 62 years. Between the years 2010 and 2014, they underwent an oral examination, and it was determined that 985 patients were healthy, 489 had moderate periodontitis, and 113 had severe periodontitis.
Well, after a follow-up of years, it was determined that the participants with periodontitis at the beginning were 49% more likely to suffer some cardiovascular event, but, in addition, it was also shown that this probability increased depending on the severity of the gum disease.
As we always point out at Clínica Bajo, periodontitis is a disease that should be treated promptly, as it can have dire consequences for our health, not only for oral health, but for our health in general. In our clinic, we will continue to focus on prevention as the main tool; periodic check-ups save us.
