What is known as cracked tooth syndrome is more common than you think. It is a small crack in the tooth that can go from the dental crown to the root, which is usually a very small, practically imperceptible crack that, however, can cause some headaches.
This small crack usually occurs in the back teeth (lower molars, upper premolars and upper first molars), it is usually difficult to diagnose because the fissures are usually almost imperceptible to the eye and are not clearly seen on X-rays either. However, as we will see below, its early detection is essential for treatment.
Cracked tooth: diagnosis and treatment
Why can a cracked tooth appear? There are various causes and factors that can affect. From trauma, bruxism, dental occlusion or even the dental morphology itself.
Depending on the type of fissure we have, we can suffer from one or another symptom. It is possible to feel a sharp pain when chewing or biting, or sometimes to have a constant, milder discomfort, which we do not usually associate with the mouth. As we have said, detecting a slight fissure is not an easy task, especially in healthy teeth that have not undergone any type of reconstruction. However, its diagnosis is vital for treatment.
We can treat a cracked tooth as long as the crack has not led to the root, but is located in the dental crown. Depending on each case, we can apply one treatment or another, such as dental inlays or crowns.
At Clínica Bajo we recommend going to professionals if you suffer from any discomfort, as well as to the relevant check-ups. In this way we can make an early detection and offer effective solutions.
