Exfoliating the skin is an ideal process to remove dead cells and encourage the regeneration of new cells. This is a great benefit for our skin but we must know how to do it and how often to avoid unwanted effects.
It is possible that if we cleanse the skin excessively, it is more vulnerable to external factors that can be harmful, from pollution itself to the sun’s rays. At Clínica Bajo we recommend that you do an examination of the type of skin you have and then establish an appropriate exfoliation routine.
How often should we exfoliate? Signs that tell us that we are doing something wrong
In general, we can set a time of between 10 and 15 days to exfoliate. However, the key is to know the skin and what it really needs. Having dry skin is not the same as oily, or combination, skin. In any case, if we see some of the signs we mention below, we are probably doing something wrong about it, whether it is the type of product or the frequency.
Sebum secretion. If you have oily or combination skin, if we exfoliate it excessively, sebum production usually increases as a natural reaction to dehydration. This, in turn, can have consequences such as increased acne and the weakening of the skin’s barrier function.
Redness. It is normal for redness to remain on the skin after an exfoliation, but these do not last more than 24 hours. If, on the other hand, they are maintained, the treatment has been too aggressive for the skin.
Feeling tightness in the skin. This usually happens when exfoliation affects the skin’s hydration by using a more aggressive one than the one we need or leaving it longer than recommended.
Sensitive skin. If we feel a reaction to the application of other products or we have more sensitive skin than normal, it means that the skin’s barrier function has been altered.
We recommend you visit Clínica Bajo so that our professionals can study your skin and recommend the best treatments and scrubs that suit your needs and your skin type.
