There are diseases that directly affect our gums and that, if not detected and treated in time, can be a major complication for our quality of life. Avoiding gum disease may be easier than we imagine, especially we have to keep oral hygiene in mind.

It should be borne in mind that our mouth is exposed 24 hours a day to many bacteria and external agents, such as the accumulation of food debris, sugar, etc. The gums are probably the most delicate area of the mouth, so they can suffer conditions that, in turn, deteriorate the quality of our teeth, even causing the loss of the tooth.

Below we are going to see what gum diseases exist and how we can detect them. Of course, always do not forget that the best diagnosis will be made by a professional.

Gum disease

  • Gingivitis: Bacteria accumulate on the teeth causing gum deterioration.
  • Periodontitis: This is an advanced stage of gingivitis, when tartar and bacteria build up under the gums. Without proper treatment, the tooth can be lost.
  • Receding gums: Over time, the gum weakens, causing possible bone loss and bleeding.

There are some common symptoms in these diseases that can alert us that something is not right. For example, if when something rubs against our gums we feel discomfort, or we see them inflamed or with a more purple color than normal, it is possible that there is some beginning of the problem.

If they bleed when biting a food or even brushing our teeth, it is because we have them more sensitive than normal and it can also be the beginning of one of these diseases. Realize that in any case, reaction time is essential, so if we go to the specialist quickly, it is likely that the disease can be reversed.

These diseases can appear due to poor daily brushing or shallow brushing. That is why we always recommend the use of mouthwash and dental floss. Other bad habits such as smoking can cause these diseases although, in some cases, it can have a genetic load.

We emphasize the importance of doing periodic check-ups to know if our gums and the rest of our mouth are in good condition. At Clínica Dental Bajo we have a team of professionals who will be happy to assist you and provide you with the best diagnosis and the best solutions.

Healthy gums should never bleed, either when eating or brushing. Letting this symptom pass or camouflaging it with commercial rinses only allows bacteria to continue silently destroying the bone that supports your teeth. At Clínica Bajo we have a unit specialized in the diagnosis and treatment of gingival health. Through advanced periodontal studies and deep cleanings (curettages), we stop the infection at the root to restore firmness, pink color and health to your mouth. If you notice your gums are inflamed, suffer from bad breath or have not had a check-up for more than six months, request a consultation with our periodontics team in Los Cristianos. Don’t put your teeth at risk and make your assessment appointment today!
