Periodontal disease is a pathology, more common than we imagine, that affects our mouth. It consists specifically of a disease that affects the tissues responsible for supporting the teeth. Although it is an infectious pathology, caused by bacteria in the mouth itself, it is not contagious. And two types of periodontal diseases can be distinguished: gingivitis and periodontitis.

On the one hand, gingivitis only affects the gum. The main symptom is bleeding and with specific treatment and care it can be solved without major complications.

On the other hand, periodontitis consists of the deterioration of the tissues that support the teeth and can even lead to the loss of the tooth. The treatment is much more complex and sometimes patients are in the terminal phase, which means that new pieces have to be placed. That is why preventing periodontal disease is so important.

Symptoms of Periodontal Disease

  • Itchy gum
  • Unexplained bleeding when brushing, flossing, or eating
  • Halitosis
  • Pain, redness, and swelling of the gums
  • Passing pus between the teeth
  • Periodontal pockets more than 5 mm deep or gingival recession
  • Tooth pain without decay

Treatment of periodontal disease

Depending on the phase of the disease, one treatment or another will have to be used. Gingivitis can be treated with a mouth cleaning and antibiotic therapy. However, if we are in a more advanced stage of the disease, sometimes we have to undergo a small intervention to graft tissue and bone or reduce the spaces of the gum.

Undoubtedly, it is essential to have a diagnosis from a team of professionals specialized in this disease. At Clínica Dental Bajo, in Tenerife, we can not only give you the best advice but also the best solutions adapted to your case. Visit us!
