Edentulism: What is it and what are its main causes?

Edentulism

At Clínica Bajo, we emphasize the importance of prevention in oral health. Many complications can be avoided if we attend professional check-ups and detect and treat any anomaly. Today, we are going to talk about edentulism, one of the greatest fears of patients, which, in some cases, can be prevented.

Edentulism is the partial or total loss of teeth and can occur for various reasons, as we will see below. Nowadays, the loss of a tooth can be repaired by many different techniques, but it is always better to avoid it as much as possible.

Causes and treatments for edentulism

Severe trauma. The loss of a tooth, or more, due to a blow is the only cause that cannot be prevented. Whether we lose the piece at the time or if it is damaged (split), it is essential to go to the dentist as soon as possible so that they can assess the case, make a diagnosis, and apply the best treatment.

Oral hygiene. On the other hand, the most common cause is usually the lack of oral hygiene. Cavities can have irreversible consequences such as tooth loss. Therefore, it is essential to have good hygiene, use dental floss, and have the relevant professional cleanings.

Periodontal diseases. Gingivitis or, failing that, periodontitis are diseases that damage the tissues that support the teeth. In other words, if we have these diseases and do not combat them, we will most likely end up losing a tooth.

At Clínica Bajo, we can apply treatments to prevent and avoid edentulism, but we also have advanced techniques so that, in case of losing a tooth, we do not have significant problems. From removable prostheses, dental bridges, or even implants, which are the most comfortable, effective, and lasting solution.
